# A Crazy Egg alternative for A/B testing without a pageview cap

Heatmaps, recordings and simple A/B testing in one subscription. Looking for a Crazy Egg alternative because your testing has outgrown it? Crazy Egg's A/B testing starts on its $99-a-month Plus plan, billed annually and capped by tracked pageviews. Otter is a dedicated A/B testing tool at $39 to $149 a month with unlimited visitors. Here is where each one is the better buy.

## About Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg is a website behavior analytics and conversion tool founded in 2005 by Neil Patel, Hiten Shah, Amee Shah and John Butler, and one of the first click heatmap tools. One subscription now bundles heatmaps, session recordings, web and conversion analytics, funnels, surveys, popup CTAs, error tracking and a marketer-friendly A/B testing tool, with unlimited domains and seats. Crazy Egg says it runs on more than 449,000 websites. A/B testing is included from the Plus plan up.

## Which should you pick?

**Choose Otter if:**

- A/B testing is the main job, and you want it for $39, $79 or $149 a month with unlimited visitors
- You want tests to keep collecting data through a traffic spike, with no pageview cap to pause them
- You want frequentist or Bayesian results, sample size estimates and an SRM check, not one significance test
- You want revenue per visitor and average order value for every variant
- You want full audience targeting on every plan, monthly billing, and a trial without a credit card

**Choose Crazy Egg if:**

- You want heatmaps, scrollmaps and session recordings in the same tool as your tests
- Your tests are occasional and simple, and one bundled tool beats buying two
- You want surveys, popup CTAs and error tracking in the same subscription
- You manage many sites and want unlimited domains and seats on one plan
- You want a free plan for analytics and heatmaps before you pay for testing

## Crazy Egg pricing in 2026

Crazy Egg publishes its prices, bills every paid plan annually, and meters on tracked pageviews, including the traffic on pages you A/B test. There are no overage fees: at the cap, heatmaps and A/B tests stop collecting until the next month, so growing traffic means moving up a plan.

## Behavior analytics first, A/B testing second

Crazy Egg's core is showing you what visitors do. Heatmap, scrollmap, confetti and overlay reports, session recordings, funnels and surveys come in one subscription with unlimited domains and seats. Newer additions include AI analysis of heatmaps and recordings, and an MCP server so AI assistants can query your Crazy Egg data. Every A/B test variant gets its own heatmaps and recordings, which helps explain why a variant won, not just that it did.

Otter does one part of that: it runs experiments and measures them. It has no heatmaps, recordings or surveys. In exchange you get four test types (split URL, A/B/n with the visual editor, targeted personalization and WordPress whole-theme tests), revenue reporting for every variant, GA4 goals and configurable statistics. If you would buy a heatmap tool anyway, Crazy Egg's bundle can cost less than two tools. If testing is the job, a dedicated tool fits it better.

## Crazy Egg pricing and the pageview cap

Crazy Egg publishes its prices, and every paid plan is billed annually. The Free and $29 Starter plans have no A/B testing. Plus costs $99 a month ($1,188 a year) with 150,000 tracked pageviews; Pro costs $249 a month ($2,988 a year) with 500,000; Enterprise costs $599 a month ($7,188 a year) with 1,000,000 (prices checked October 11, 2026; yearly totals computed). Only pages you choose to track count, but the traffic on pages you A/B test counts toward the cap.

Crazy Egg's policy is 'no overages, ever'. When a plan's monthly limit is reached, data collection, including A/B testing, pauses until the first of the next month, and more capacity means upgrading or buying an add-on through sales. That protects your budget, but it means a successful campaign can stop a test partway through the month. A store whose tested pages draw 300,000 pageviews a month has outgrown Plus and needs Pro.

Otter has no traffic meter. You pay $39 a month for one project, $79 for five or $149 for unlimited, billed monthly or annually, with unlimited visitors and unlimited tests on every plan. Tests never pause because traffic went up. Every plan is on our [pricing page](https://www.otterab.com/pricing).

## Testing depth: statistics, targeting and goals

Crazy Egg reports significance with a chi-squared test of each variant against the others, and offers an optional multi-armed bandit that reweights traffic every few hours. It doesn't describe Bayesian or sequential options or a sample-ratio-mismatch check. Otter's manual splits use frequentist analysis (a two-proportion z-test, or Fisher's exact test for small samples) or Bayesian chance to beat the original, at an 80, 90, 95 or 99% threshold that rises automatically when a test has several variants. Bandit tests use Bayesian reporting automatically. Otter also estimates sample size and duration for frequentist tests and checks for sample ratio mismatch in each test's Trust Check. Our free [significance calculator](https://www.otterab.com/free-tools/significance-calculator) runs on the same engine.

Targeting depends on the Crazy Egg plan. Plus targets tests by device type only, Pro adds country, UTMs, conversions and more, and Enterprise gets every segment; audience targeting for personalization is an Enterprise feature or a paid add-on. Otter offers the same targeting on every plan: country, device, operating system, browser, screen width, language, referrer, traffic source, UTM, new or returning, time of day, day of week, cookies, URL parameters and your own visitor properties, combined with AND/OR rules.

Goals are closer. Crazy Egg counts clicks, page visits, form submissions, ad pixel events from Google, Meta and TikTok, e-commerce platform events, custom code and client-side GA4 events. Otter counts pageviews, clicks, custom JavaScript events, GTM dataLayer events, revenue and imported GA4 events. Crazy Egg has a form-submission goal and Otter doesn't, so on Otter you track a form with a click goal, a thank-you page or a custom event.

## GA4, revenue and Shopify

Both tools work with GA4 in two directions. Crazy Egg sends a custom event to GA4 when a variant is viewed, and it can count GA4 events fired in the browser (by gtag, Google Tag Manager or a client-side CDP) as conversions; events sent to GA4 only from a server aren't detected. Otter sends impressions, conversions and revenue to GA4 and the GTM dataLayer, and can use a GA4 event as a test goal by reading GA4's own reports through its API. That route needs two custom dimensions registered in GA4, and results follow GA4's processing delay.

Revenue is the bigger gap. Otter reports total revenue, revenue per visitor and average order value for every variant, converts multiple currencies into one reporting currency, and ignores duplicate orders. Revenue comes from a generated Shopify Custom Pixel (in opt-out consent mode), the Otter WordPress plugin for WooCommerce, or one optimo.revenue() call on any site. We couldn't find revenue or order value metrics in Crazy Egg's A/B testing documentation. Its Shopify integration tracks Add to Cart by default, and checkout events need a custom pixel and Shopify Plus. Our [ecommerce A/B testing guide](https://www.otterab.com/ab-testing/ecommerce) covers what to measure.

## When Otter is the better Crazy Egg alternative

Choose Otter when you run tests every month and want them judged on revenue, on a bill that doesn't care how much traffic you send through them. Choose Crazy Egg when you mainly want to watch visitors and run the occasional simple test. Many teams use both: Crazy Egg's free plan includes web analytics, Instant Heatmaps and surveys, and Otter runs alongside it from its own script in the page head. The two don't integrate, so each reports on its own.

Switching tests over is straightforward: install the Otter snippet in the head, rebuild your running tests in the visual editor or as split URL tests, confirm your goals fire in Otter's preview bar, then stop the tests in Crazy Egg. Otter's anti-flicker is built into the snippet, so you don't need to request flicker code. ## The bottom line

Crazy Egg is a good buy when behavior analytics is the main need. Heatmaps, recordings, surveys, funnels and simple A/B tests share one annual subscription with unlimited domains and seats, and a free plan covers basic analytics.

Otter is the better fit when A/B testing is the main need. It costs $39 to $149 a month with unlimited visitors, never pauses a test for traffic, reports revenue per visitor for each variant, and offers frequentist or Bayesian statistics with full targeting on every plan. Before you decide, compare [Convert](https://www.otterab.com/compare/convert), which also bundles heatmaps with testing.

If you want both behavior data and serious testing, run Crazy Egg for heatmaps and recordings and Otter for experiments.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does Crazy Egg cost?

Crazy Egg has a free plan and four paid plans, all billed annually: Starter at $29 a month, Plus at $99, Pro at $249 and Enterprise at $599. A/B testing starts on Plus, which includes 150,000 tracked pageviews a month. Each plan also caps heatmap reports and recordings. These prices were checked on Crazy Egg's pricing page on October 11, 2026.

### Does Crazy Egg have a free plan with A/B testing?

No. Crazy Egg's free plan includes web analytics, Instant Heatmaps, conversion analytics and surveys, but no A/B testing, heatmap reports or recordings. Testing starts on Plus at $99 a month billed annually. Paid plans come with a 30-day trial that requires a credit card. Otter has no free plan; its 14-day trial needs no card.

### Is Crazy Egg good for A/B testing?

For simple tests, yes. Crazy Egg has a visual editor, split URL tests, an optional multi-armed bandit and unlimited tests on Plus and above, and each variant gets its own heatmaps and recordings. Its limits are a single chi-squared significance test, device-only targeting on Plus, no documented revenue metrics in test reports, and a pageview cap that pauses tests when reached.

### What happens when you hit Crazy Egg's pageview limit?

Crazy Egg doesn't charge overage. When you reach your plan's monthly tracked-pageview limit, data collection pauses, including heatmaps and A/B testing, and resumes on the first of the next month. To keep collecting, you upgrade or buy extra capacity through sales. Otter has no pageview or visitor limit, so tests keep running whatever your traffic does.

### Does Otter have heatmaps or session recordings?

No. Otter is an A/B testing tool and has no heatmaps, session recordings or surveys. If you need those, Crazy Egg or another behavior analytics tool can run on the same site as Otter. The two don't integrate, but each loads from its own script, so you can watch behavior in one tool and run experiments in the other.

### Can Crazy Egg and Otter use GA4 events as goals?

Yes, both can, in different ways. Crazy Egg counts GA4 events fired in the browser through gtag, Google Tag Manager or a client-side CDP, but not events sent to GA4 only from a server. Otter connects to your GA4 property and reads the event from GA4's reports, which needs two custom dimensions registered in GA4 and follows GA4's processing delay.

### Is Otter cheaper than Crazy Egg?

For A/B testing alone, yes. Crazy Egg's cheapest plan with testing is $99 a month billed annually, capped at 150,000 tracked pageviews. Otter starts at $39 a month with unlimited visitors and monthly billing. Crazy Egg's price also covers heatmaps, recordings and surveys, so if you need those too, compare it with the cost of Otter plus a separate behavior analytics tool.
